A ‘Bake Off’ competition was held at the Minhaj centre on Romford Rd, Newham on the 16th October 2016 at the second Macmillan tea party which was organised by Minhaj-ul-Quran London (MQI) and Minhaj Welfare Foundation (MWF).
Volunteers and members of MQI London and MWF gathered to raise awareness and support the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity. The organisations have always been eager to support local charitable activities and work in the UK.
Muzammel Rafiq, a senior representative of MQI London group thanked everyone for coming together for an amazing cause. He said:
It is very important that as Muslims we highlight the importance of cancer and its effects on our community.
He further spoke of his experience when a family member was diagnosed with cancer and how Macmillan were very supportive to the family.
Dr Farak (a local GP) and Abdul Malik (a community health worker) provided their general advice about cancer.
The main highlight of the event was a ‘Bake Off’, with special thanks to the judges Dawood Mash’hadi, Jabeen Akhtar and Sadif Rafiq who were lucky enough to decide the winners of both the adult and under 16s competition. The winners were all awarded with prizes including afternoon tea at a central London hotel along with tickets to an ice hockey game. Details of the winners are below:
- Adult Competition: Muzammel Rafiq and Aneesa Tanveer
- Under 16s competition: Khadija and Mustafa (3 years old)
The organisers thanked everyone for attending the event, participants were encouraged to buy cakes in which all proceeds including donations went to Macmillan Support Cancer charity. A total of £435 was raised.
